Wooden house or home with love heart

Show your home some love this month

This time of year, with shorter, colder days and longer, colder nights, it can be easy to take your home for granted.  Gardens can look like a neglected sea of mud.  But our houses and gardens are usually our biggest assets and it does pay to look after them.  Even if you are not planning on moving for the foreseeable future, maintaining your property now should pay dividends when the time does come for your next move.

This time of year can actually be the best time of year to tackle those jobs you have been putting off, so that when the Spring weather comes you are ready to enjoy it.

Here are some of our top tips to show your home some love this month:

Let it breathe

Ventilation is a big issue in many houses.  Particularly during the colder winter days the last thing you want to do is open a window and let all that lovely heat escape.  But houses need to breathe.  Opening windows or trickle vents even just for a short period each day can allow moisture to escape and reduce the risk of any mould or damp.

Let it flow

Clear out gutters to ensure water can run freely.  During autumn and winter they can get blocked with leaves and twigs.  But any blockages run the risk of water sitting next to roof tiles and leading to leaks or gutters breaking.  Clear them out yourself or ask a company who can come and do it for you.  Some window cleaners offer it as an extra service which they can do at the same time.

Don’t let it slip

Check your roof for any slipped tiles or appearance of damage.  Winds and rain in winter can cause loose tiles to move.  Getting them repaired not only looks better but ensures your roof is water tight and your home is protected.

Tidy, Tidy, Tidy

Tidy up gardens and repair any fences.  Of course now isn’t the time for planting and it can seem too early to be out in the garden.  But tidying up and ensuring fences are in order can make a big difference in a short space of time.  It also means that you can be ready to start planting and enjoy your outside space once the warmer weather arrives.  Maintaining boundaries is a vital part of looking after your property – especially when it comes to the sale of your home.  If a boundary that needs repairing isn’t yours, start discussions with the owner early and don’t just leave it.  When you do come to sell your home it might cause more of a problem than you think.

Time for a Spring clean

Yes it isn’t quite Spring yet.  But if the weather leaves you stuck inside then why not take the opportunity to tackle some of those jobs like cleaning carpets and curtains or daring to look behind the sofa.  With those out of the way you can make the most of the better weather when it comes.

Spring is still traditionally one of the busiest times on the property market so if you feel you are ready to show a new property some love then please give us a call on 01252 819725 or email us at info@check4houses.co.uk.  We would be happy to give you a free, no obligation valuation of your home.  At Check 4 Houses our local team has all the knowledge of a traditional high street agent, but at the cost of an online agent.  We can sell your property from as little as £599 or 0.5% + VAT. This could save you thousands when compared to standard agency fees, giving you more to lavish on your new home.

British food fish and chips

Enjoy the best of Britain during British Food Fortnight

British Food Fortnight runs from 17th September to 2nd October this year and is a celebration of the best that British food has to offer.

British Food Fortnight is the biggest annual, national festival of British food and drink. First started in 2002, it is now in its 15th year and there are competitions and events planned across the country to celebrate this milestone. Many businesses and organisations are taking part, including schools and hospitals as people come together to enjoy the excellent produce Britain creates.

On the Love British Food website you can find 14 things you can do during British Food Fortnight to take part. These including buying British products that feature the Red Tractor logo, buying food that is in season and therefore likely to be home sourced, and cooking a British meal for your friends and family. We all love a good bangers and mash don’t we?

Locally in Hampshire, local shops, pubs and restaurants are likely to be celebrating so keep your eye out for special promotions. Down on the Hampshire coast, the village of Emsworth celebrates British Food Fortnight in style with a whole fortnight of activities including farm open days, Brewery open days and wine tastings, cooking masterclasses and even a Tea Dance. In Berkshire you could take the opportunity to shop at your local Thames Valley Farmers Market Cooperative, which is in Reading on 17th September and 1st October, and Newbury on 18th September and 2nd October.

If you are based in Surrey, why not head along to the Surrey Game and Country Fair at Loseley Park in Guildford on Sunday 25th September. In the Food Hall and Food Theatre you can enjoy a wide range of food and drinks grown, reared, brewed, caught or baked in Surrey.

If you are looking to move within or even relocate to Hampshire, Berkshire or Surrey and their surrounding areas then we can help you find your ideal property. Abstract colour paint splatter

Dash of Colour lights up Frimley this weekend

This Saturday sees the green Frimley Lodge Park become a colourful rainbow for the afternoon with the Dash of Colour event.  This fun 5k walk, jog or run (or even dance or hop!) raises money for Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice, based in Farnham, Surrey.  Phyllis Tuckwell is the only Hospice Care service for adult patients, and their families, living with cancer or other serious progressive illnesses across the whole of West Surrey and part of North East Hampshire.  For over 35 years they have provided supportive and end of life care to local people, serving 550,000 residents.

The event starts at 1pm in Frimley Lodge Park and spectators are welcome – even if they might get messy!  The special non-toxic, biodegradable paint is thrown at approximately each kilometre point along the route.  Participants are also issued with a small sachet of powder paint to throw in the air at the same time at the start to create a rainbow moment as the event begins.

If the Colour Run isn’t for you then there are plenty of other local events on this weekend.  Why not head to the Camberley Car Show?  This event is open from 10am till 4pm and sees the streets in and around Camberley Town Centre decorated with a wide variety of vehicles including many rare examples of Veterans, Vintage, Classics, Hot Rods and Motorcycles.  Alongside the eclectic car selection visitors can enjoy live music and lots of other entertainment.  It promises to be a great day out for the whole family.  The event is free to attend and aims to raise funds for the South West Thames Kidney Fund which supports essential research into kidney disease and diabetes.  Last year the event raised a fantastic £7,000.

If you are looking to move within or even relocate to Farnham, Camberley and their surrounding areas then we can help you find your ideal property.  Why not check out our properties currently for sale, as well as some comments from happy customers who have sold their property through Check 4 Houses.  We can sell your home from just £499 or 0.5% + VAT.  Please give us a call on 01252 819725 or contact us and we can give you a free, no obligation valuation of your home.

Fleet Carnival logo

Join in the fun at Fleet Carnival this weekend

The ever popular Fleet Carnival takes place this weekend from 1st-3rd July 2016.  The theme for this year’s Grand Procession on Saturday 2nd July is ‘Rio’ in preparation for the Olympics there this summer.  Floats will be taking inspiration from the Olympics as a whole, one of the 42 different sports that are part of the Olympics, or the Rio Carnival itself.

Carnival opens at 5pm on Friday 1st July on Calthorpe Park playing fields with the fun fair, live music and Bingo Night in the marquee.  Three live bands will be performing including ‘The Cherries’ and ‘Off the Record’.

On Saturday the carnival fun begins again at 10am, with the main procession starting at 1pm.  Live music, the Kidszone, food stalls and the fun fair all run throughout the afternoon with plenty to entertain everyone.  There are already over forty floats confirmed for the procession – with everything from fireman to librarians and vets to hairdressers, as well as many local schools.

Sunday 3rd July is show day and with the car show, dog show and even baby show there is something for just about everyone.  The dog show features nine different categories for everything from Puppies to Golden Oldies and Loveable Lads to those with the Waggiest Tails.  The annual Makers Market will have over 40 local stalls including quilters, jewellers and painters as well as edible delights such as jams and fudge.

Whilst Fleet Carnival is of course about bringing local people together and having fun, it also raises lots of money for local charities.  Proceeds from this year’s event will be going to Chloe’s & Sophie’s Special Ears Fund (CSSEF).  CSSEF is inspired and motivated by Chloe and Sophie Jackson.  Chloe and Sophie are sisters and both live in Aldershot, Hampshire.  They are both deaf.  The charity is passionate about raising deaf awareness in the local community, including providing deaf awareness sessions, story sacks and resource kits for schools.

Local Hampshire Food Festivals In May

May sees the return of some of the best food festivals in Hampshire and a chance to get those taste buds going, particularly as we come into the Summer season of fresh British produce.

The Alresford Watercress Festival takes place on 17 May 2015 and brings together the local community and food lovers from far and wide to celebrate watercress – the superb locally grown, delicious and versatile crop.  The entire centre of New Alresford becomes a huge street festival with a large food market.  One of the highlights of the festival is the street cavalcade with jazz musicians, Morris dancers and local school children accompanying the Watercress King and Queen who sit on top of a horse and cart.  The children will be distributing the first of the season’s watercress harvest to festival-goers.  In the Cookery Demo Unit you can watch well-known award-winning chefs and food writers including Jack Stein, son of Rick Stein, demonstrate their skills and some mouth-watering recipes and even cheer on those in the World Watercress Eating Championships.  Entry to the festival is free and if travelling by car you can take advantage of the park and ride service from Ropley to Alresford with either a free ride on the Mid Hants Railway ‘Watercress Line’ or, during peak times, a free coach ride into Alresford.

The Fleet Food Festival is a week later on 24 May and promises to be a flavourful array of fantastic food, tasty talks and demonstrations, workshops, family activities and an appetising menu of live music.  Highlights include a tantalising range of fresh and regional produce in the Food Market, prestigious regional chefs and master classes in the Cookery Theatre, inspirational food and wine talks and Q&A with the experts, family fun in the hands-on children’s area, speciality real ale and refreshing drinks in the Pint ‘n’ Pimms Tent and an exciting line-up of live music in the picnic area.  Entrance is just £1 and under 5s go free.  Special, discounted parking is available in Fleet to support the event with parking just £1 all day in the main town centre car parks and free in Hart Shopping Centre.

Fleet is a thriving community and was voted one of Britain’s top 20 places to raise a family in 2014.  If you are looking to relocate to Fleet or surrounding areas then why not check out our properties currently for sale in Fleet, as well as some comments from happy customers in Fleet who have sold their property through Check 4 Houses.

Good luck to all the runners in the Woking and Fleet Half Marathons

At Check 4 Houses we are passionate about supporting our local community and wanted to wish the brave runners in the Surrey and Fleet Half marathons coming up the best of luck.

The Surrey Half Marathon takes place on Sunday 8th March, starting and finishing at the Woking Leisure Centre.  The event is the biggest half marathon in Surrey and is great training for any local people taking part in the London Marathon this year – as well as an amazing achievement in itself.  The event also includes a Kids Race of 2km for children aged 6-16 years.  If you fancy going along to support the runners you can enjoy the range of live bands along the route, as well as cafe and food stalls, shops and kids activities in the Event Village.

The Fleet Half Marathon is a few weeks later on 22nd March.  In its 34th year, the long established Fleet Half Marathon is open to over 2,500 runners and features a traffic-free course which is gently undulating. The route is well marshalled and benefits from professional medical support. Designed to be completed in under 3 hours, the course also offers an ideal build-up to the London Marathon or a fantastic achievement in itself.
