Sunday 23rd October is the annual Fleet 5+10k run in Calthorpe Park and many local runners will be out in force to complete the challenging race.
The race kicks off at 10am in Fleet Town Centre, outside the Harlington Centre. The 5k route passes through the town centre towards the station, then into Elvetham Road, Reading Road North and once more into Fleet Road. Those running 10k complete two laps of the course. The route is on public roads and allows a fast pace so that some runners can push themselves to achieve a personal best.
Last year nearly 1,000 runners took part in both the 5k and 10k events and Fleet high street was packed on both sides with supporters. Entries for this year’s race are still open so it you fancy a challenge then now could be the time to sign up online. Entries close on Monday 10th October or before if the race limit is reached. The race costs £12 or £14, depending on your affiliation, and could be your best achievement yet.
Fleet & Church Crookham Athletic Club
The event is run by registered charity Fleet & Crookham Athletic Club, which was founded in 1960. It raises funds for the promotion of community participation in healthy recreation and the provision of facilities and coaching for all running/athletics disciplines in the Fleet area.

British Food Fortnight runs from 17th September to 2nd October this year and is a celebration of the best that British food has to offer.
British Food Fortnight is the biggest annual, national festival of British food and drink. First started in 2002, it is now in its 15th year and there are competitions and events planned across the country to celebrate this milestone. Many businesses and organisations are taking part, including schools and hospitals as people come together to enjoy the excellent produce Britain creates.
On the Love British Food website you can find 14 things you can do during British Food Fortnight to take part. These including buying British products that feature the Red Tractor logo, buying food that is in season and therefore likely to be home sourced, and cooking a British meal for your friends and family. We all love a good bangers and mash don’t we?
Locally in Hampshire, local shops, pubs and restaurants are likely to be celebrating so keep your eye out for special promotions. Down on the Hampshire coast, the village of Emsworth celebrates British Food Fortnight in style with a whole fortnight of activities including farm open days, Brewery open days and wine tastings, cooking masterclasses and even a Tea Dance. In Berkshire you could take the opportunity to shop at your local Thames Valley Farmers Market Cooperative, which is in Reading on 17th September and 1st October, and Newbury on 18th September and 2nd October.

This year’s Fleet Half marathon took place on Sunday 20th March and was another fantastic running event.
Celebrating its’ 35th Anniversary this year, the Fleet Half Marathon has always been a popular pre-London marathon race. The event is designed for runners of all abilities and is well supported by local residents. Since the first event in 1982, thousands of runners have completed the race and it has become a highlight of the local sporting calendar.
The gently undulating 13 mile route is traffic free and finishes in the delightful Calthorpe Park area, with good local support along the way. The fully marshalled course travels over a mix of urban and rural roads through the town centre and surrounding countryside and provides a rewarding challenge in itself, as well as being for some a vital part of their London marathon preparations.
This year the race supported two main charities – Bloodwise (formally known as Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research) and Arise All Saints, for the restoration of All Saints Church, following the fire. Around 3,500 runners entered the race supporting more than 60 charities in total, with some runners choosing to fundraise for their own charities.
If you didn’t quite make the Fleet Half Marathon but are feeling inspired to start running, the Fleet 5k and 10k takes place on Sunday 23rd October so you have plenty of time to get your entry in and start training. You can find out more at www.fleet10k.co.uk
